How to paint your cabinets with Fusion
Clean your cabinets thoroughly
Grease and dust are the enemy of a lasting finish. Use Fusion TSP Alternative diluted in water and scrub every surface — including the inside edges and cabinet frames. Even cabinets that look clean will have airborne grease buildup. This step takes 30-60 minutes but determines how well your paint will last.
Remove doors and hardware
Take off all cabinet doors, drawers, and hardware. Label each hinge with a piece of tape so you know exactly where it came from — you'll thank yourself during reassembly. Painting the doors flat gives you a much cleaner finish with fewer drips and brush marks.
Apply your first thin coat
Load your brush lightly and apply a thin, even coat working in the direction of the wood grain. You have about 30-60 seconds to spread the paint before it starts to dry — don't overwork it. Apply one coat and walk away. Wait 4-12 hours between coats for best results.
Apply a second coat
Most colours cover beautifully in two thin coats. Whites and very light colours may need a third. Resist the urge to apply thick coats — thin and patient is always better. Check edges and corners where paint can pool.
Optional: add a topcoat for extra durability
Fusion has a built-in topcoat, so this step is optional. For kitchens with heavy use, add Fusion Tough Coat over lighter colours or Stain and Finishing Oil over darker colours for extra protection. Allow the final coat to cure fully before heavy use — about 21 days for full hardness.
