How to Paint Wood Panelling Step by Step
Clean and Assess Your Panelling
Remove all dirt, grease, and cobwebs with TSP cleaner or degreaser. Check for loose nails or damaged sections that need repair. Fill any holes with wood filler and let dry completely before proceeding.
Light Sanding for Adhesion
Lightly sand glossy or varnished surfaces with 220-grit sandpaper to create tooth for the paint. Focus on shiny areas rather than sanding the entire surface. Vacuum all dust and wipe clean with a tack cloth.
Prime if Needed with Ultra Grip
For very glossy surfaces or wood with tannins that might bleed through, apply Fusion Ultra Grip primer. Most previously painted or natural wood can skip this step since mineral paint bonds well to most surfaces.
Apply First Coat of Mineral Paint
Using a high-quality synthetic brush or foam roller, apply mineral paint in thin, even coats. Work with the wood grain and maintain a wet edge. Don't overwork the paint as it sets quickly.
Second Coat and Finishing Details
After the first coat is completely dry (usually 2-4 hours), apply your second coat for full coverage. Use a small artist brush to get paint into grooves and detailed areas. Most projects need only two coats.
