How it works

How to Paint Your Front Door

1

Clean and Prep the Surface

Remove your door from its hinges and lay flat on sawhorses. Clean thoroughly with TSP or degreaser, focusing on the bottom rail where dirt accumulates. Light sanding with 220-grit paper helps the paint adhere better.

2

Apply Fusion Ultra Grip if Needed

For glossy surfaces or previously painted doors that feel slick, brush on a thin coat of Fusion Ultra Grip primer. This creates the perfect base for your mineral paint to bond properly.

3

Paint the Panels First

Start with the recessed panels using a high-quality angled brush. Work the paint into all corners and details, maintaining a wet edge. Fusion paint flows beautifully, so work quickly but don't overbrush.

4

Paint the Rails and Stiles

Move to the horizontal rails, then the vertical stiles. Use long, smooth strokes and blend any brush marks while the paint is still wet. The mineral content helps level out minor imperfections naturally.

5

Apply Second Coat and Reassemble

Once the first coat is completely dry (about 2 hours), apply your second coat using the same technique. Allow 24 hours before rehanging your door to ensure a rock-hard finish.

Common questions

Front Door Painting Questions

Do I need primer when using fusion mineral paint on my door?
Fusion Mineral Paint has built-in primer, so you can paint directly over most surfaces. However, if your door has a high-gloss finish or is made of laminate, apply Fusion Ultra Grip first for maximum adhesion.
How long should I wait before using my door after painting?
Allow 24 hours before light use and 30 days for full cure. The paint will be dry to touch in 2 hours, but the minerals need time to fully harden for maximum durability.
Can I use fusion paint near me on exterior doors?
Absolutely. Fusion Mineral Paint is designed for both interior and exterior use. It resists UV rays, moisture, and temperature changes better than regular paint, making it excellent for front doors.
What's the difference between fusion chalk paint and mineral paint?
Fusion Mineral Paint contains actual minerals that create a harder, more durable finish than chalk paint. It's specifically formulated for high-use surfaces like doors and furniture that need maximum durability.
How much paint do I need for a standard front door?
Most front doors require about 1 litre of Fusion Mineral Paint for two coats. If your door has lots of detail work or panels, consider getting slightly more to ensure you don't run short mid-project.
