As an oil painter with 25 years of experience, and working professionally since 2017, I’ve experimented with many of the big-brand gessoes, but I consistently find that Tri-Art’s gesso stands out in terms of quality and affordability. It offers an excellent tooth and a great absorption rate for oil paint, making it ideal for my work.

For full transparency, I have collaborated with Tri-Art in the past, testing their oil paints, though they didn’t quite align with my particular style. However, I am not sponsored by Tri-Art and genuinely recommend their gesso based on my personal experience.

Very opaque and covers well. Thick creamy consistency.

Excellent viscosity. Thick but not too thick. Allows thinning for multiple layers for a smoothie consistency. Excellent! Just need a new type of cap, like the tin caps for classic spaghetti bottles, with outside serrations for gripping, because your current cap hurts the hands . When gesso dries from residue,it bonds with the plastic cap.- hard to open, and hurts the palm

Great coverage and finish. I’ve also used it in place of white paint when glazing. Its matte finish reduces some of the added sheen you can get when painting with glazes and veils.
