How to paint cabinets, step by step

Every space is a bit different, but most cabinet painting projects follow the same basic steps. Take your time with prep and you will see the difference in the final finish.

  1. Remove doors, drawers and hardware. Label everything so it goes back in the right place.
  2. Clean thoroughly. Use a degreaser to remove oils, cooking residue and fingerprints.
  3. Scuff sand. Lightly sand to dull the existing sheen and give the paint a surface to grip.
  4. Wipe away dust. Vacuum and tack cloth or wipe with a damp cloth so the surface is clean.
  5. Prime where needed. Use a bonding primer on slick surfaces or a stain blocking primer on problem woods.
  6. Apply the first coat of cabinet paint. Use a quality brush and foam roller for a smooth finish.
  7. Apply a second coat. Allow adequate dry time between coats and check for touch ups.
  8. Add a topcoat if required. In busy kitchens a clear topcoat can add extra durability.
  9. Reinstall doors and hardware. Once the paint has had time to dry and begin curing, rehang everything carefully.

Cabinet paint FAQs

Do I have to sand my cabinets before painting

In most cases you should at least scuff sand to remove gloss and provide some tooth for the paint. On very slick or glossy surfaces you can combine light sanding with a bonding primer to improve adhesion.

Can I paint laminate or melamine cabinets

Yes, many laminate and melamine cabinets can be painted if they are properly cleaned and primed. A bonding primer designed for difficult surfaces is usually recommended. We can help you choose the right one in store.

How long does cabinet paint take to cure

Most paints feel dry within a few hours, but full cure can take several weeks. During that time it is best to treat the surfaces gently, avoid harsh cleaners and let the finish harden before heavy use.

What sheen is best for cabinets

Many people prefer a soft satin or eggshell finish because it hides minor imperfections and is easy to clean. Some projects call for a glossier topcoat for extra wipeability. We can show you sheen samples in store so you can match the look you prefer.
